MOTORWAY SPEED LIMIT FOR LORRIES COULD BE CUT

Lorry and minibus drivers could face having their motorway speed limits cut under plans being consulted on by the government.

The Department for Transport said changes were needed because new vehicles are fitted with speed limiters, and older vehicles are not.

The speed limit for heavy goods vehicles under 7.5 tonnes would be cut from 70mph to 60mph. Minibuses and small buses and coaches would have a reduced limit of 65mph, down from 70mph.

Road safety minister Paul Clark said last night: "We want to provide clarity. These proposals simplify speed limits so everyone abides by the same rules, regardless of the age of their vehicle."

Under the plans, buses and coaches longer than 12 metres would have their limit increased from 60mph to 65mph. Lorries and buses would be banned from the outside lane of a motorway.

The consultation will run until April 27.
